How to Prepare Your RV for Its First Summer Outing

If your RV has been lying vacant for the past few months of winter, then there is a lot to do before you can take it for a summer vacation. The state your RV will be in depends entirely upon the RV brand that you own, so the best thing you can do is come up with a checklist and follow it accordingly to ensure that you do not miss out on any important aspect of preparation. This will keep you from any sort of inconvenience on the road.

Never underestimate the importance of a checklist. It can save you from lots of hassles while you are enjoying your summer vacation.

There is no ultimate checklist that you can pick from the internet and use it to prepare your RV, as every RV is unique and needs a custom-made preparation checklist. However, there are some important elements that you must include on your checklist.

Inspection of Tires

The first thing on your checklist should be the inspection of tires. When RVs are not used for a long time it is possible for it to develop rot and bald spots. This could make the tire bursts as soon as you hit the road.

Get them serviced or replaced if you think they are in the poor condition.

Hitch Inspection

Hitch is a small but an important part of your RV. The first thing you must inspect is the trailer ball mount. Ensure that the clip and pin are not damaged and are securely attached. If there is any problem with it, your RV could detach while taking sharp turns.

The next thing that you must inspect is the coupler. Ensure that it is securely attached to the trailer ball.

Inspection of Storage Latches

There are several storage latches on the outside of the RV, which can become loose when the RV hasn’t been serviced for a long time. When these latches become loose, they can open while the RV is being driven and can knock on the nearby vehicles, leading to a serious accident.

Inspect all the latches and if you find any of them broken or displaced in any way, then get them replaced immediately. All the storage latches should be secured before the vehicle starts moving.

The Interior

There are various things inside the RV that must be securely in place. This includes virtually all things, such as fridge, kitchen utensils, drawers, storage cabinets and any other loose items.

If you forget to perform an inspection of the interior, your RV will soon be in mess once you start moving.

You must keep adding more things in your checklist as you take more trips. It is better to go on a short trip before planning a long one in summer, as this will help you understand other aspects of RV maintenance that you could be missing out and identify any potential problems with your RV that you may need to get a repair for.
