4 Signs Your RV Needs Service or Repair before You Make That Camping Trip

Just like other vehicles, RVs need to be regularly maintained too. Typically, an RV would be used for a stretch but then parked and remain unused for several weeks. It is because of this that the vehicle must be checked, maintained and, if need be, taken to an RV dealer for servicing.

1. Air pressure in the tires

Tires tend to lose air pressure when the RV is not in use. This could be dangerous when you start to drive your RV. Hence, tire pressure needs to be checked with a good quality tire inflation gauge. Also make sure to always carry a spare tire with you. Incorrect tire pressure can build up excessive heat which might lead to tire failure and can be fatal especially if you are on the road.

2. Plumbing

Water leaks must be checked for and taken care of right away. The way to do that is by turning the 12-volt water pump when there is fresh water in the holding tank. Pressurize the water system until it turns off automatically. If the water pump cycles on by itself again, that implies there is a leak in the plumbing.

3. Damaged exterior

Check the outside of your RV for debris or dust that might have fallen and accumulated on the body. Once it is cleaned, inspect for cracks or dents that may get worse over time. Get them fixed before they cause any greater damage while on the road.

4. Check the batteries

You might assume that since the battery was charged the last time you used the vehicle, it should be fine the next time you use it after months. Batteries discharge up to 10% a month when it is in storage. If you did not check and recharge your batteries while the RV was parked, make sure you charge the battery fully before you plan your next trip.

After fully charging the battery, water levels need to be checked in lead acid batteries and distilled water must be added as required. Sometimes the battery might need to be reinstalling to ensure functional connectivity.
