Clean Your RV Roof Vent With These Simple Tips

Rooftop vents on RV vehicles tend to get dirty over time. With debris constantly falling on top of the vent and cooking smoke rising through the vent, they can get clogged.

A vent that’s clogged requires cleaning to be able to function appropriately. The falling debris might block the fan and the moisture might lead to the production of mold.

Typically, RV rooftop fans require cleaning once a year. However, you can save a lot of time by cleaning these vents when you climb up top for a roof inspection.

Follow these simple steps to clean your RV Roof vents easily:

  1. Open up the vent hatches from inside the RV.
  2. If you have a vent fan, turn it off.
  3. Extract the vent screen from inside the RV. Soak this vent screen in a sink filled with a blend of water and liquid detergent soap. Let it sit while you complete the rest of the roof maintenance.
  4. Gather a few soft cloths and a trash bag before carefully climbing on top of the roof. If the RV is equipped with a cent shroud, bring along a screwdriver. Bring a complete toolset if you are unsure of the size of screwdriver you need.
  5. Lift the shroud from the vent after screwing it carefully.
  6. Use the soft cloth to wipe away the vent shroud from the inside and the outside.
  7. Pull out all sorts of solid debris from inside the vent. You might see leaves and twigs inside.
  8. Use another soft cloth to clean the fan blades.
  9. Reinstall the vent shroud.
  10. Now climb down from the roof slowly.
  11. Inspect all caulking around the vent and look for cracks on the hatch and shroud. Apply fresh caulking wherever needed and patch up all cracks until you can replace them.
  12. Also consider scrubbing the vent screen that was left in soap water. A soft toothbrush will help you scrub off all mold and dirt.
  13. Once scrubbed clean, rinse the vent screen in clean water before reinstalling the vent.
Cleaning the vents regularly can go a long way in helping you maintain the quality of air inside your RV and ensuring that the environment inside stays comfortable.
