Before You Hit the Road, Get These Things Checked in your RV

What fun is traveling in a bus full of crying babies and one that doesn't let you stop and enjoy the view on the way to your destination?

For those that want to make the most of their travels, and stop to enjoy the scenes they see along the way, RV's are the best mode of travel.

If you are a proud RV owner, ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime with your loved ones, make sure that nothing can rain on your parade. Get your RV checked out for repairs and make sure you have the following in check:

Inspect for water damage

This is a very important inspection because you don't want to be traveling in a home that has weak walls and possibilities of mold. Being stuck in that small place can worsen allergies, cause new ones and affect the overall quality of health. Another issue that comes with water damage in RVs is that it can attract rodents and you don't want to be storing your food close to these. Or sleep next to them...Yikes!

Why You Need Maintenance

If your RV has been resting for whatever reason, it means it's not ready to go. In fact, RVs can deteriorate in storage over time because they are meant to be used. The natural oil that your tires have can dry and they can actually get worse just sitting there. Excess sun exposure can also cause degradation of your tires. The gas in your tanks can also disintegrate and even grow algae if you have diesel. Your generators are also at risk if not used or exercised.

Routine Maintenance

To find out how often you need this, take a look at the owner's manual for your RV and how long the intervals between maintenance should be. Get your RV to an experienced technician and they will check some of the following to ensure the best service you get:

  • Electrical systems
  • Appliances
  • Collision damage
  • Weather damage
  • Plumbing issues and water damage
  • Coolant and transmission checks
  • Generator service
  • Oil change
If they do find that something needs replacement, get it done even if you have to delay your trip. When you're on the road, you will be grateful for these when that particular part doesn't just decide to break down fully.

Coach Maintenance

If you're planning a long trip, getting coach maintenance is a good idea. This means a look-over for the carbon monoxide detector, smoke alarm and fire extinguisher. You can get some 12 volt batteries to be on the safe side. You can also clean out the AC filters yourself as this saves on fuel costs and helps your engine perform better by cutting down excess load. The rest your RV technician should be able to take care of.

Get your refrigerator checked out and if you are traveling to some place hot, consider investing in a thermostatically controlled refrigerator vent fan. This will keep your refrigerator cool and working well.

You must have the generator thoroughly inspected and repaired before your trip. This includes the operation of the generator under load. Replace the engine oil if the RV has been standing for some time and replace all filters for optimum performance.
