RV Land’s 5th Wheel Buying Guide

5th Wheel
RVs come in all shapes and sizes, but are divided into two broad categories: motor homes and towable.

In the towable category, 5th wheels are the most popular for several reasons. The most important reason being stable and safe towing due to the gooseneck connector. The gooseneck connector is on the overhanging section of the trailer that is attached to the back of a truck. This provides a better center of gravity and makes towing a lot easier and safer.

Here are certain important considerations before buying a 5th wheel camper:

Amenities

Due to its size, 5th wheels provide a wide range of amenities, which include:
  • Full size home appliances
  • Central VAC system
  • Large flat screen TVs with surround sound stereos
  • Full kitchen with cabinets and countertops
  • Complete bathroom with shower facilities
  • A master bedroom
  • Workstations
  • Complete furniture, including beds, sofas, recliners and tables
  • Fireplace

Size

5th wheels come in all sorts of sizes and forms. The lengths start from 22 feet and can go as long as 40 feet.

However, the 36, 34 and 32 sizes are the ones which are mostly preferred by the users. The interior spacing of the kitchen and dining room can also be extended using slide-outs, and some 5th wheels also allow this feature in bedrooms.

Owners can also have more slide-outs installed in their 5th wheels according to their requirements, but this means adding more weight to the vehicle.

Price

The prices for 5th wheels start between $27,000 and $31,000. However, this does not include the cost of the towing vehicle. A truck may also need to be purchased along with the RV, as 5th wheels cannot be towed with vehicles without a flat black.

Number of campers

The most important question, especially for families, is that how many people can sleep in a 5th wheel at a time.

This mainly depends on the size of the 5th wheel and the number of slide-outs that are available. However, a 5th wheel will be able to comfortably accommodate 6 to 8 people at night. The number can always be increased by installing more slide-outs.

Since there are several options when it comes to selecting an RV, it is also important to consider the pros and cons of the 5th wheel before making a purchase.

Pros

  • Convenient Towing:The prime advantage of 5th wheels is the gooseneck connector and the safety and convenience of towing the vehicle.
  • Spacious:5th wheels are also generally more spacious compared to other RVs in the same price range.
  • Detachability:5th wheels are also easily detachable which allows campers to enjoy small excursions around the area.

Cons

  • Towing Vehicle:since 5th wheelers must be attached to a vehicle with a flat back, usually a truck, purchasing a new towing vehicle is an additional burden for the owner.
  • Expensive:5th wheels are generally more expensive than other RVs which provide the same amenities.
