Caring For Your RV Awning

The awning on your RV is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about RV maintenance. In fact, the awning is one of the least talked about parts of RVs.

However, considering the cost of awning replacement, being slightly diligent with its upkeep will help you make it last longer.

With normal use and standard maintenance, the awning will last the lifetime of the RV.

Here are a few tips you can use to care for your RV awning:

Understand The Type Of Awning On Your Vehicle

RV awnings are either made of acrylic or vinyl fabrics. How you care for the awning depends on the type of material it is made with.

However, both acrylic and vinyl awnings can be hosed off with water to keep them dust and stain free. The lesser you scrub the better it is. Scrubbing aggressively wears down the fabric and manufacturer applied coatings.

For vinyl awnings use a softer brush and a mild soap/water mixture. Vinyl awnings are coated with a special material that discourages mold growth. Make sure you don’t scrub way this coating.
On the other hand, you can use slightly stiff brushes for acrylic awnings.

Never Roll Up A Wet Awning

One of easiest ways to destroy the awning is to roll it up damp and store it this way. If moisture sits on the awning overnight, it could promote growth of mold and eventually rot the awning.
Every time you are about to pack up, let the awning dry out before rolling it.

Don’t Let The Wind Put Load On The Awning

A good way to keep your awning in shape and in place is to use clamps at the supporting ends. Clamps will help stabilize the awning in case of strong wind conditions.

Strong winds put the awning at a higher risk of tearing from spots where it is fastened. One straight tear could mean an entire awning replacement.

One simple way to make the RV awning last longer is to conduct routine maintenance checks and cleanups. Only use a mild detergent and a soft brush with light strokes. To clean the awning, roll it down without opening the arms and water it with a hose before cleaning.
